Rocks and Minerals
Our planet Earth is composed of minerals and rocks. A mineral is a homogeneous, usually crystalline product of natural processes, having certain physical properties and chemical composition. Rocks are composed of minerals and are natural aggregates of minerals.
The collection of rocks and minerals of the Belozersk Regional Museum of Local Lore has been formed since 2005. The first samples were provided to the Museum by an employee of the Kirov Regional Museum of Local Lore, geologist Nina Melanina. An interesting collection of rocks and minerals was acquired in 2010 and represents finds from different countries and continents – from the Caucasus, the Urals and Central Asia to Madagascar, Egypt and Zaire. The collection was carried out on the territory of the Belozersk district. Andrey Volov, head of the Museum of Nature, did a great deal of work on completing the collection.
Now the Museum's collection of rocks and minerals includes 266 samples. All items are exhibited in the exposition of the White Lake Museum in its sections "From the Depths of Centuries" and "Minerals and Rocks of the World."
The collection of minerals from the Kola Peninsula is considered to be complete to the utmost. Among them are dolomite, ore, staurolite, fluorite, glendonite, diopside and others. The Vologda region is characterized by finds collected by specialists from the Vologda State Pedagogical University in 2012: granite, limestone, quartz, diabase, slate.
