Collection of keys

In the collection "Metal" of the Belozersky Regional Museum of Local Lore there are about 70 keys of the XIX – early XX centuries. The basis of this collection consists of items from the collection of the local history circle of Secondary School No. 2 in Belozersk.

The following types are presented: keys from padlocks (such locks were often called "hanging" or "hanging"): for example, the so-called "Swedish" locks in the form of a box with two curved side walls, spring locks; from internal locks, decorative furniture keys and their other varieties.

There are sets in the collection: keys together with locks. For example, an overhead axe–shaped lock of the XIX - early XX century. and a key from it with a complex beard (photo). The shield of such a lock resembles an axe in shape (photo) – an ancient weapon in the form of an axe, only without a long handle. Similar locks could close the doors of churches, city gates, houses of rich merchants.

The keys differ in size. So, the largest key is 36.5 cm long, and the smallest key is only 3 cm. The details of the keys are made differently - strict oval rings and curly rings with patterns inside; a straight rod and a rod with many protrusions; beards of various shapes. The designs of the beards depended on the complexity of the castle.

The collection contains products made by Nikolai Petrovich Shamarin, the father of outstanding designers and inventors Andrei, Nikolai, Boris and Vladimir Shamarin. Among the items made by the Belozersk craftsman is a padlock and a key to it. (photo)
