Belozersk Symbol Badges

In the second half of the 20th century, badges were massively produced in our country. They were dedicated to anniversaries, significant events, as well as certain topics, such as aircraft, space, Komsomol, pioneers, fairy tales and many others.

Badges depicting the coats of arms of towns and cities were very popular. The town of Belozersk has several badge collections dating back to the 1970s.

The coat of arms of Belozersk is one of the ancient ones. Officially it was approved on August 16, 1781.

The coat of arms of our town is depicted in different ways on the badges. Different colors are used, details and elements are added and changed.

The museum collection includes 9 badges with the coat of arms of Belozersk. Using their example, we will trace how the coat of arms has changed over several decades.

Каталог значков с символикой города Белозерска:

1.    Belozersk (1980). The blue shield is split by a red strip in the center with the inscription “Belozersk”. There is a symbolic image of a yellow boat with a sail floating on waves at its top. The bottom part has the date “862”, two crossed yellow fish with their heads down and wavy lines around the perimeter of the badge. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

2.    Belozersk. Volga-Baltic Waterway (1970) made by the Optics and Mechanical Plant in Belozersk.   It is a round badge on a glass base with the coat of arms in its center. There is a boat with a sail in the waves on the blue background at its top and two crossed fish with their heads down at its bottom. When did the boat appear? On May 22, 1970 the Executive Committee of the Town Council of Worker Deputies approved the new version of the Belozersk coat of arms created by P.Goryachev by Resolution No. 8. It is described as follows: ”The shield is divided into two parts. The upper light blue one has a sailboat floating on waves. The lower blue part has two crossed gold sterlets and the year of 862”. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

3.    Belozersk (1987). In 1987, one more badge with unusual symbols of the town was designed for the 1125th anniversary of Belozersk. It consists of a pad and the badge itself. The blue pad imitates a tape with the inscription “Belozersk”. The sign in the form of the shield of the coat of arms is white and divided by a blue strip in its center. The upper part has two crossed fish with their heads up. Sterlets, if so, are depicted very schematically. The lower part has two houses that are images of stone buildings of the Ministry of Railways of the 19th century located along the Belozersk bypass canal. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

4.    Belozersk. Northern Necklace (1980) designed by the Russian Souvenir Experimental Creative and Production Plant in Moscow. In the 1980s, a series of badges called the Northern Necklace came out. The Russian Souvenir Creative and Production Plant in Moscow produced 12 badges dedicated to towns and cities of the Russian North such as Arkhangelsk, Belozersk, Veliky Ustyug, Vologda, Kargopol, Kirillov, Onega, Solvychegodsk, Totma, Ustyuzhna, Kholmogory, Cherepovets. The common feature of all badges was their oval light silver shape. Inscriptions in the Old Slavonic font were made around the circle. City names were written at the top and the series name was given at the bottom. The coat of arms of Belozersk in this series differs in the color of details: the shield of the coat of arms in blue and light blue, the cross is red, the semi-moon and fish are light silver. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

5.    Belozersk badge (1999) designed by the Optics and Mechanical Plant in Vologda. In the late 1990s, a badge designed by E.B. Arkhipov was released. Yu. Kalinkin described the coat of arms on the badge in the Heraldicum: “A golden boat with a silver sail on an elevated wavy solver belt connected with a silver heraldic shield at the bottom with two crossed silver sterlets in the azure field”. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

6.    Belozersk (1997). In 1997, 2 types of badges were designed to celebrate the Day of Belozersk. One of them belongs to the Coats of Arms of the Vologda Region series. Such badge has a blue and white shield, a white cross and semi-moon, fish with pronounced golden scales. The second one is a special anniversary badge. 1350 copies of such badges came out. The badge designer was artist Robert Malanichev. He developed a whole series of badges for towns and cities that celebrated their anniversaries in 1997: Belozersk – 1135, Vologda – 850, Domodedovo – 50, Zhukovsky – 50, Kirillov – 600, Lytkarino – 40, Nizhnevartovsk – 25, Novy Oskol – 350, Staritsa – 700. Images of city crowns on the badges are golden (yellow) for regional centers, silver (white) for district centers and red for other towns. Correspondingly, the white crown was used for Belozersk and its coat of arms was the same as approved in 1781: “The lake with two sterlets in it and a semi-moon with a cross above them”. The addition introduced by Emperor Nocholas I in 1847 was used: the coat of arms of a provincial town was to be crowned with a royal crown and the district coat of arms was to be crowned with a tower or town crown. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

7.    Belozersk 1135 designed by K.F. Mochenov, Moscow (1997). In 2004, a plastic-based badge was produced as a souvenir. The inscription “Belozersk was founded in 862” was on its yellow background as well as the official coat of arms of Belozersk approved by the Self-Government Committee by Resolution No. 167 on October 12, 2001. The designer of the new coat of arms was Oleg Svidirenko (Vologda).
Here is its full description: “The main part of the coat of arms is a rectangular shield which base equal to 8/9 of its height in the middle of the bottom part has a point and rounded corners.
The azure and silver wavy-crossed shield has a wide cross above a silver semi-moon at the top and two crossed silver sterlets with dark red fins slightly azure-bound (mixture of cobalt and ultramarine) at the bottom. Azure is a symbol of beauty, softness and grandeur. The bottom part of the shield symbolizes the lake”. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

8.    Belozersk Was Found in 862 (2004). The same image of the coat of arms but with the symbol of the Vologda region can be seen on the badge designed in 2010. Sterlets remain unchanged on the coat of arms used in the design of badges. The shield, cross, semi-moon changed their shape and color. Various details were added to them. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

9.    Belozersk (2010, Vologda region). Our collection also includes badges recently made by local enterprises and establishments and dedicated to various events. For example, the local administration released souvenir badges. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

10.    Beloozero 2000 Festival (2000, Vologda region). In 2000, Belozersk hosted the second international festival of Russian folk and classical music. The festival was one of the events to celebrate the 1138th anniversary of our town. A souvenir badge with the festival logo was ordered for this huge, quite literally, event. The logo was used during the first festival already and represented a symbolic musical staff on the Earth background. Just years were changed. The «Белоозеро 2000» inscription can be seen on the badge . ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ

11.    Beloozero 2001 Third International Festival of Russian Folk and Classical Music (2001). In 2001, a badge with images of women wearing traditional Russian dresses was released. It is interesting to note that these women performed during the previous festival and their picture was on posters and banners in 2001. Badges with images of monuments, places of interest and symbols of the Belozersk area made not so often being replaced by magnets. But we hope that our collection of phaleristics with symbols of Belozersk will be added in future. ГОСКАТАЛОГ.РФ
